BROWNSVILLE – The fifth-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team fell to No. 4 Chicago State University in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday at Brownsville Tennis Center.
UTRGV (0-1) had the early advantage in doubles as it was up a match by default. Chicago State (1-0) won its matches on courts one and two to take the point.
With Chicago State being down a player, UTRGV got the point at No. 6 doubles, which tied that match at 1-1.
Sophomore
Zane Kohrs gave UTRGV the 2-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cody Wurzelbacher at No. 5 singles before Chicago State tied the match at 2-2 with a win at No. 1 singles.
Freshman
Te Kani Williamsfell behind in his match with Gonzalo Martinez at No. 4 singles after falling 2-6 in the first set. Williams battled back with a 7-6 win in the second by winning 10-8 in the tiebreaker. Williams was forced to retire due to an injuring allowing Chicago State to take the 3-2 lead.
Chicago State close out the match with a win at No. 3 singles and will face top-seeded Grand Canyon on Saturday.
