EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team dropped the season opener to the University of Miami 4-0 on Thursday in front of a UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex record crowd of 1,080.
 
The previous attendance record at the complex was set on Sept. 30, 2016 for a men's soccer match against Kansas City. The previous women's soccer record at the complex was accomplished on Aug. 27, 2017, when 865 fans watched a match against Corpus Christi.
 
UTRGV (0-1-0) outshot Miami (1-0-0) 6-3 while trailing in shots on goal 4-3. 
Tyler Speaks (1-0-0) made three saves in the first half while combining with 
Melissa Dagenais on the shutout.
 
Miami scored 20 minutes into the match on a strike by 
Kristina Fisher off a feed by 
Bayleigh Chaviers to make the score 1-0.
 
That was it until midway through the second half when 
Lauren Markwith scored and then, less than a minute later, 
Ine Østmo scored on a penalty kick to make the score 3-0.
 
Tia Dupont scored on an assist by 
Dejah Cason in the 77
th minute to complete the scoring.
 
UTRGV hosts Alabama State on Saturday at 7 p.m. Admission is complimentary all season, courtesy of Entravision. Gates open at 6.
