COLLEGE STATION – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team fell to Texas State 1-3 (25-14, 20-25, 10-22, 20-25) as part of the Texas A&M Invitational on Friday at Reed Arena.
Freshman
Victoire Nama led UTRGV (5-4) with 12 kills, four digs and three blocks. Senior
Barbara Silva finished with 10 kills. Sophomore
Sarah Cruz recorded six kills, four aces and five blocks. Junior
Veronika Jandova posted six kills and five digs. Junior
Debora Nazario dished out 28 assists with 13 digs for her fifth double-double. Junior
Samaret Caraballo posted 21 digs with four aces and four assists.
Cheyenne Huskey led Texas State (4-5) with 16 kills and 13 digs.
Texas State jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set before back-to-back Silva kills helped UTRGV score three-straight points to take the lead. The set stayed within one point until UTRGV broke a 9-9 tie with an 10-0 run that was capped by back-to-back Cruz aces. UTRGV served up five aces during the set, including two in a row by Caraballo to end the set.
UTRGV kept the second set tight, leading 15-14 on an error and then pulling even at 17-17 on another error before Texas State went on an 8-3 run to close the set.
After dropping the third set, UTRGV came out strong in the fourth set, going up 19-15 on a Nama kill. Texas State won the next seven serves to take the lead. A Cruz kill brought UTRGV to within 20-22, but that's as close as the team got.
UTRGV wraps up the tournament at 7:30 p.m. against host Texas A&M.
