Women's Soccer Drops Showdown to Corpus Christi

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 1-0 as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
 
UTRGV's (3-2-1) lead over Corpus Christi (3-4-0) in the showdown standings is now 6-3.
 
Corpus Christi got on the board courtesy of Dana Curtis off a feed by Abby Deakin at 15:55, ending UTRGV's shutout streak at 409:09, the third-longest streak in program history.
 
Senior Kinga Szemik (3-2-1) finished with three saves.
 
UTRGV outshot Corpus Christi 20-6 overall and 9-4 on goal. Sophomore Emily Zapata led UTRGV with six shots, including three on goal. Senior Sarah Bonney attempted four shots, including one on goal. UTRGV also had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
 
Kayleigh Hall (3-4-0) made nine saves for the shutout.
 
UTRGV wraps up this four-match home stand on Friday at 7 p.m. against Grambling State. Admission is complimentary, courtesy of Entravision. Gates open at 6.
 
The next event of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is volleyball on $2 Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
