HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team used three second half goals to defeat Marshall University 3-2 on Tuesday at Hoops Family Field.
UTRGV (3-1) trailed 1-0 after a Marshall goal by
Vinicius Fernandes at 11:39 but senior
Kyle Edwards didn't waste much time to start the second half as he tied the match at 1-1 at 45:20. Edwards took the pass from senior
Angel Lopez to score his third goal of the season.
Junior
William Akiogave UTRGV the lead for good as he took a pass from Lopez and scored his second goal of the season, which made it 2-1 at 69:53.
Almost seven minutes later, Akio converted on a penalty kick at 76:38 for his second goal of the match to make it 3-1 UTRGV.
Marshall's
Bleno Cruz added a goal in the final seconds to get within 3-2.
Senior
Andy Rios (3-1) made five saves in the match with Marshall's Paulo Pita making three saves.
UTRGV will be back in action Saturday when it hosts Central Arkansas in its home opener at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
