Silva's Career Night Leads Volleyball to Showdown Victory

CORPUS CHRISTI – Senior Barbara Silva recorded a career-high 24 kills to lead TheUniversity of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3-2 (18-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-20, 15-10) as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Wednesday as Dugan Wellness Center.
 
UTRGV (3-1) now leads Corpus Christi (1-3) in the showdown standings 6-0.
 
Silva, who eclipsed her previous career high by three kills, did so on .488 hitting while adding two blocks. Sophomore Sarah Cruz recorded 13 kills with 11 digs, four blocks and three aces for her second-straight double-double. Senior McAllen Memorial alum Draik Banks recorded nine kills on .353 hitting with nine blocks, one off her career high. Junior Veronika Jandova posted seven kills, and seven blocks, including four solo blocks. Junior Debora Nazario dished out 45 assists with 14 digs and three blocks for her second double-double.
 
Rachel Young led Corpus Christi with 13 kills. Kylie Filipiak recorded 12 kills. Chloe Simon finished with 11 kills.
 
After dropping the first set, UTRGV fell behind in the second set 6-10. That's when a Silva kill sparked a 6-1 run to give UTRGV the lead. Corpus Christi led once more, at 13-12, before a Jandova kill tied the set. Then, with the set tied at 14, an error gave UTRGV the lead for good.
 
Later, down 1-2 in the match, UTRGV came back from down 9-10 in the fourth set with an 8-2 run that was keyed by two Banks blocks, a Jandova block, a Nazario ace, and kills by Cruz and Silva.
 
UTRGV led almost the whole way in the fifth set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead on a Cruz ace. UTRGV went up 11-6 on a Cruz kill and 14-9 on a Silva kill before another Silva kill ended the match.
 
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 4 p.m. against Maryland in the opening match of the UTSA Classic.
 
The next event of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. when women's soccer hosts Corpus Christi at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive #BeatCorpus t-shirts. Admission to soccer matches is complimentary, courtesy of Entravison. Gates open at 6.
