SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team fell to Houston 0-3 (23-25, 13-25, 24-26) to close out the UTSA Classic on Saturday at the Convocation Center.

Sophomore Sarah Cruz led UTRGV (4-3) with 13 kills. Senior Barbara Silva recorded 11 kills on .333 hitting. Freshman Victoire Nama finished with seven kills and six digs. Junior Debora Nazario dished out 30 assists with 11 digs for her third double-double. Junior Samaret Caraballo posted 17 digs.

Abbie Jackson led Houston (4-4) with 16 kills, six digs and three aces. Megan Duncan finished with had 11 kills.

The first set was tight throughout. The first two-point lead came on a kill by senior McAllen Memorial alum Draik Banks to put UTRGV up 8-6. The next two-point lead came on a Rachel Tullos kill that put Houston up 16-14. Houston pushed its lead to 19-16 on an Abby Irvine kill, but kills by Cruz and Silva helped UTRGV win five of the next seven serves to tie the set at 21. One point later, a Silva kill tied the set at 22. One serve after that, a Nama kill tied the set at 23. A kill by Isabel Theut and an error, however, ended the set.

Cruz came up with a kill on the opening serve of the second set before Houston won six-straight serves to take the lead. UTRGV got as close as four twice, including at 3-7 on a Silva kill, but Houston responded with a 10-4 run to push the set out of reach.

Houston won three of the first four serves of the third set and had an early 8-6 lead before kills by Silva and Nama and a Cruz ace gave UTRGV the lead. Another Silva kill tied the set at 10, but Houston scored four-straight points to regain the lead. Houston pushed its lead to 19-14 before a block by Cruz and Banks, a Cruz kill, an error and a Silva kill brought UTRGV to within one. One serve later, a Banks kill helped UTRGV climb to within 19-20. Then, after a Jackson kill, UTRGV took advantage of an error, a block by junior Veronika Jandova, a Silva kill and another error to take a 23-21 lead. UTRGV reached set point at 24-22 on a Silva kill. Houston, however, won the final four serves to end the match.

UTRGV opens up the Texas A&M Invitational on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against Northwestern State.
