Women's Basketball Defeats Chicago State for First Road Victory of the Season

CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team picked up its first road win of the season with an 87-67 victory over Chicago State University on Saturday at the Jones Convocation Center.
 
The 87 points scored tied a program record for the most points scored in a Western Athletic Conference game that was set last week against California Baptist. 
 
Juniors Amara Graham and Trelynn Tyler led the Vaqueros (7-9, 2-1 WAC) with 14 points each with Tyler adding seven rebounds and four assists. Graduate student Jordan Agustus added 13 points while redshirt junior Zhane Templeton chipped in with 11 points.
 
Alexandria Cliff led Chicago State (0-17, 0-4 WAC) and all scorers with 23 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Bethany Carstens added 13 points while Ines Mata Boix recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. 
 
The Vaqueros quickly jumped out to an 10-2 lead after a jumper by Agustus just two minutes into the first quarter. After a layup by redshirt sophomore Ashlei Lopez that gave UTRGV the 19-12 lead, Chicago State answered with a 6-2 run to get within 21-18 at the end of the first. 
 
Chicago State opened the second quarter with back-to-back buckets to take the 22-21 lead before a layup by senior Megan Johnson and a three-pointer by Templeton gave the Vaqueros the lead for good at 26-22. Later in the quarter, a three-pointer by Halie Jones gave the Vaqueros the 37-31 lead going into halftime.
 
In the third quarter, Chicago State stayed close as a layup by Precious Adediran got them within 43-41 with 4:55 left in the quarter. UTRGV answered with a 12-4 run that started with a Tyler layup and was capped by a layup by junior Iva Belosevic making it 55-45 with 2:42 left to play in the third. 
 
UTRGV led by 10 points entering the fourth quarter and opened up the lead with a 14-4 run that was capped by a Graham three-pointer making it 74-57 with 7:13 left to play. Later in the fourth, back-to-back layups by Graham gave the Vaqueros its biggest lead of the game at 87-63 putting the game out of reach. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Thursday, January 16, when it hosts Seattle U for Back to School Night at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Current UTRGV students get free general admission with a valid UTRGV student ID. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at UTRGVTickets.com.
