RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team opened Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play with the best WAC scoring output in program history, beating the California Baptist University Lancers 87-68 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The previous program record for scoring in a WAC game was 84 points, accomplished in double overtime at Kansas City on March 7, 2015. The previous program record for points in a regulation WAC game was 81, set on Jan. 27, 2016 against Chicago State.
Junior
Zhane Templeton led the Vaqueros (6-8, 1-0 WAC) with a career-high 17 points while hitting a career-high five three-pointers. Junior
Trelynn Tyler scored 13 points with three steals. Graduate student
Desirea Buerge scored 12 points with five rebounds. Graduate student
Jordan Agustus posted her third double-double with 10 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and three blocks. Freshman
Sara Bershers finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Delacy Brown led the Lancers (8-8, 0-2 WAC) with 16 points.
Georgia Dale scored 11 points with seven rebounds.
The first quarter was tight throughout, with senior
Megan Johnson making a pair of free throws at the end of the period to put the Vaqueros up 16-14. Buerge opened the second quarter with a pair of three-pointers, and then Templeton followed suit, while junior
Amara Graham added one of her own to cap what became a 19-6 run to put the Vaqueros up 33-20.
Tyler put an exclamation point on the quarter with a three and a jumper to put the Vaqueros up 45-27.
The Vaqueros led by 19 at 49-30 on back-to-back Agustus baskets. The Lancers responded with an 11-2 run to pull within 51-41. A layup by junior
Iva Belosevic, however, sparked a 17-8 run to end the quarter, restoring the Vaqueros' 19-point lead at 68-49.
The Vaqueros led by as much as 23 at 87-64 on back-to-back Templeton threes with 2:47 remaining.
UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Kansas City.
