Men's Tennis Ready Busy Weekend at H-E-B Tournament of Champions

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team will play three matches in two days as it competes in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions starting on Friday.
 
UTRGV will play two matches on Friday at the H-E-B Tennis Center as it faces DePaul at 10 a.m. and Eastern Washington at 5 p.m. UTRGV will close out the weekend against Troy at 10 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. 
 
Last Time Out
  • UTRGV (1-4) picked up its first win of the season by defeating Laredo Community College 4-3.
  • UTRGV won the doubles point after winning on No. 1 and 3 spots. Michael Loyd and Samuel de Felipe Garcia clinched the point with a win at No. 3 doubles. 
  • Carlo Izurieta, de Felipe Garcia, and Alberto Mello each won in singles with Izurieta's win over Juan David Ramirez clinching the match.  
 
All-Time Series Against DePaul
  • UTRGV is 1-2 against DePaul in a series that dates back to 2009.
  • Both teams met last year at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions and it was DePaul coming away with the 4-2 victory back on Feb. 22, 2019.
  • UTRGV's win over DePaul came back on Mar. 3, 2010 when it won 6-1 in Corpus Christi. 
 
All-Time Series Against Eastern Washington
  • This is the first matchup between UTRGV and Eastern Washington.
 
All-Time Series Against Troy
  • UTRGV is 0-1 against Troy all-time.
  • Troy won the only matchup 4-1 back on Mar. 2, 2018 at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
 
Scouting DePaul
  • DePaul is 3-7 on the season.
  • DePaul has wins over Illinois-Chicago, Toledo, and Creighton.
  • DePaul is currently on a two-match losing streak after falling 1-4 to Wichita State and 3-4 to Drake.
  • DePaul is 26-26 in singles play this spring while also posting a 12-12 doubles record, while using just four doubles teams.
  • Boris Spanjaard leads the team with seven victories in singles play this season.
  • Spanjaard and Chris Casati lead the team with four doubles victories.
 
Scouting Eastern Washington
  • Eastern Washington is 1-4 on the season.
  • Its lone win came against Whitworth after defeating them 7-0. 
  • Eastern Washington is currently on a two-match losing streak after falling 0-6 to Gonzaga and 0-7 to Washington.
  • Eastern Washington is 8-21 in singles play this spring and 3-11 in doubles.
  • Wout Doumen and Mikayel Khachatryan lead the team with two singles victories each. 
  • Three doubles teams have come away with one victory for Eastern Washington. 
 
Scouting Troy
  • Troy is 5-3 this season.
  • Has wins over Auburn University at Montgomery, Tennessee State, Alcorn State, Florida A&M, and North Alabama. 
  • Is currently on a three-match win streak and is coming off of a 6-1 win over North Alabama back on Feb. 14. 
  • Troy is 34-14 in singles play while posting a 15-6 doubles record as a team.
  • Carles Anton leads the team with an 8-0 record while Oskar Michalek has posted a 7-1 record.
  • Anton and Pelayo Antuna have team for a team leading 8-0 record in doubles. No other team has posted more than two wins.
