STILLWATER, Okla. – Despite outhitting the competition 12-11, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the No. 24 Oklahoma State University Cowboys 11-7 on Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Senior
Coleman Grubbs led the Vaqueros (2-4) by recording his 11
th-career multi-RBI game and second of three or more by going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Graduate student
Andy Atwood went a career-best 4-for-5 with a home run, a double and a stolen base. Junior
Freddy Rojas Jr. posted his first multi-RBI game, going 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI. Juniors
Christian Sepulveda and
Jacob Hirsh each added two hits and a run scored. One of Sepulveda's hits was a double. Hirsh also drew a walk and stole two bases.
Grubbs' home run came on the fifth pitch of the game and he added a sacrifice fly an inning later to put the Vaqueros up 2-0.
Then, with the Vaqueros down 6-2 in the sixth, a Grubbs RBI-single sparked a four-run inning that included a run-scoring wild pitch and a two-run single by Rojas to tie the game.
Atwood belted his home run in the eighth against
Kale Davis (1-0) to bring the Vaqueros within 9-7.
The Cowboys (4-2) scored four runs in the third on a
Caeden Trenkle home run, a two-run double by
Jake Thompson and an RBI-single by
Max Hewitt.
The Cowboys added two in the fourth against junior
Jesus Aldaz (0-1) on a fielder's choice and an error.
Then, with the score tied at 6 in the bottom of the sixth,
Kaden Polcovich hit an RBI-single and Thompson came up with a sacrifice fly to put the Cowboys back on top.
Carson McCukser came up with an RBI-double in the seventh to put the Cowboys up 9-6.
Hewitt added a two-run triple in the eighth to complete the scoring.
UTRGV and Oklahoma State wrap up the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
