RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team fell 1-6 in its home opener to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union on Wednesday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
The Vaqueros (0-4) now trail the Islanders (6-1) 28-14 in the showdown standings. 
 
The Islanders opened doubles play with a win at the No. 2 spot but it was the team of junior Zane Kohrs and senor Mateo Schmit who answered with a 6-3 win over Kyohei Yamanaka and Carlos Berna Ruiz at the No. 3 spot. The Islanders would take the point with a win at the No. 1 spot taking the advantage into singles.
 
Kohrs kept rolling into singles play as he picked up his first singles win of the season. He opened with a 6-2 win in the first set of his match with Pascal Lorieul at the No. 5 spot. After falling 2-6 in the second set, he closed out the match with a 6-2 win in the third to get UTRGV on the board.
 
Corpus Christi got wins at the No. 4, 2, 6, 3, and 1 spots to clinch the win. 
 
UTRGV will be back in action on February 13 when it hosts Laredo Community College at 2 p.m. the Orville Cox Tennis Center. The next event in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union will be a women's tennis match on February 9 at 2 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
