RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team picked up its third straight win after defeating the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) 5-2 on Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (6-8) fell behind in doubles after falling at the No. 3 spot but the team of junior Zane Kohrs and sophomore George Hutchings answered with a 6-2 win over Marwin Kralemann and Oliver Valentinsson at the No. 2 spot.
 
The duo of juniors Carlo Izurieta and Alberto Mello clinched the point for UTRGV with a 6-3 win over Omar El Kadi and Luke Godwin at the No. 1 spot. 
 
Mello added to UTRGV's lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Godwin at the No. 6 spot to open singles play. Izurieta then made it 3-0 UTRGV with a 6-3, 6-2 win over El Kadi at the No. 1 spot. 
 
After UIW (2-5) picked up a point with a win at the No. 4 spot before sophomore Samuel de Felipe Garcia defeated Valentinsson 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot to clinch the win for UTRGV. 
 
Kohrs added a victory at the No. 5 spot as he defeated Marko Galic. Kohrs started off his match with a 6-4 in the first set before falling 5-7 in the second. The tiebreaker was a tight one but it was Kohrs coming away with the 12-10 victory.
 
UIW added a victory at No. 3 singles to close out the match. 
 
UTRGV will next be in action on March 25 when it hosts Drexel at 3 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
