FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team won its second game in as many days, beating the Cal State Fullerton Titans 72-67 on Tuesday at Rolle Activity Center.
Junior
Justin Johnson led the Vaqueros (4-2) with 18 points, nine rebounds and a career-high tying four assists. Junior
Ricky "Doc" Nelson scored a career-high tying 17 points with a season-high tying four rebounds and seven assists. Freshman
Donte Houston Jr. scored a career-high 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting with a career-high eight rebounds and a career-high three blocks. Graduate student
Mike Adewunmi grabbed seven rebounds with five points and one block.
E.J. Anosike led the Titans (2-3) with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Latrell Wrightsell Jr. finished with 17 points.
The Vaqueros led for most of the first seven minutes, going up 12-9 on an Adewunmi free throw. The Titans responded with a 14-1 run to go up 23-13 before Adewunmi, graduate student
Marek Nelson and Houston knocked down triples to power a 13-3 run to tie the game at 26.
The Titans went on a 7-2 run to go up 33-28 in the opening seconds of the second half. That's when Doc Nelson made a three and a layup to spark a 13-3 run to put the Vaqueros up 41-36.
The Titans got as close as four twice, including at 46-42. Johnson answered with a three and Doc Nelson made a layup to put the Vaqueros up 51-42.
Later, with the lead down to five, Houston made a layup and Doc Nelson drained a three to give the Vaqueros their largest lead at 60-50 with 5:46 remaining.
The Vaqueros again led by 10 at 62-52 on a Johnson jumper.
The Vaqueros led by nine at 71-60 with 53 seconds left on a Houston layup. A pair of Wrightsell threes helped the Titans climb to within 71-67 with 15 seconds remaining, but that's as close as they got.
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. at #14 Illinois in a game that will be broadcast in
B1G+.
