RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team closed out UTRGV South Padre Island Classic and non-conference play with a 54-32 loss to the Liberty Flames on Saturday at the South Padre Island Convention Centre.
Graduate student
Taylor Muff led the Vaqueros (4-7) with nine points and three rebounds. Sophomore
Sara Bershers scored seven points with nine rebounds and a season-high four blocks. Freshman Edinburg alum
A'nnika Saenz hit the first two three-pointers of her career en route to the first six points of her career.
Jordan Bailey led the Flames (11-1) with 16 points.
Mya Berkman scored 11 points with six rebounds.
Bridgette Rettstatt scored 10 points with seven rebounds.
The Vaqueros jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a layup by sophomore
Jena' Williams, a Muff jumper and a Bershers three.
The Vaqueros still led at 11-8 on a Soysal layup, but the Flames responded with a 14-0 run to take a 22-11 lead midway through the second quarter.
The Flames used an 11-2 run from the closing seconds of the second through the opening eight minutes of the third to build a 36-19 lead and push the game out of reach.
UTRGV opens Western Athletics Conference play on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. against Stephen F. Austin at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at
