RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the California Baptist University Lancers 79-64 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Sara Bershers led the Vaqueros (4-9, 0-4 WAC) with 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Graduate student
Amara Graham scored 15 points with five rebounds and three assists. Junior
Burcu Soysal posted her first-career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Junior
Jordan Lewis scored nine points with 11 rebounds and two steals. Sophomore
Jena' Williams finished with 10 points, five rebounds and two steals.
Sydney Palma led the Lancers (18-0, 10-0 WAC) with 23 points on 9-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-4 from behind the arc.
Ana Olaeta scored 13 points with 11 assists, six rebounds and four steals.
Caitlyn Harper scored 13 points with 11 rebounds and five assists.
Britney Thomas scored 12 points with six rebounds.
The Lancers hit six of their first nine shots, including a pair of three-pointers, to jump out to a 14-4 lead.
Junior
Jessica Martino and Graham hit layups to help the Vaqueros pull to within 14-9, but the Lancers scored the next seven points to go up 21-9.
Soysal converted a three-point to play to spark a 7-0 run for the Vaqueros. Later, with the score 29-20, Soysal made a jumper to spark a 7-3 run to bring the Vaqueros to within 32-27.
Then, with the Vaqueros down 37-29, Williams made a three, Lewis hit a free throw and Graham made a layup to make the score 37-35 at halftime.
The Vaqueros pulled to within 39-38 on a Bershers three early in the third quarter and then took their first lead at 42-40 on a pair of Lewis free throws.
The Vaqueros led again at 44-42 on a Williams jumper, but the Lancers responded with a 19-5 run to take the lead for good.
