CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team is back in action when it competes at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions starting on Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
UTRGV will face Troy on Friday, followed by UTSA on Saturday and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday.
This marks the sixth straight year competing in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
WAC Doubles Honors
The team of
Zane Kohrs and
Luka Jankovic earned their second-straight Western Athletic Conference Doubles Team of the Week honor.
The duo picked up a 7-5 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Ryuya Ata and Nathan Schwartz at the No. 1 spot.
This is the second straight week the duo has been named WAC Doubles Team of the Week and the Vaqueros' third of the season.
Playing Texas Troy
- Troy is 7-1 on the season entering play at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
- Troy is on a two-match win streak after defeating Mercer.
- Troy's lone loss this season came against North Florida.
- Troy is 45-9 in singles play while posting a 28-31 record in doubles.
- Vito Llinares leads the team with eight singles victories this spring.
- Troy has used 10 different doubles teams this spring as Charles Anton and Pelayo Antuna lead the team with six wins.
- UTRGV is 0-2 all-time against Troy.
- Troy won the last match 4-0 on Feb. 22, 2020.
Playing UTSA
- UTSA is 1-2 on the season entering play at the H-E-B. Tournament of Champions.
- UTSA's lone win came against Rice back on Jan. 16 picking up the 5-2 victory.
- Its two losses came against Tulane (0-4) and LSU (2-5).
- UTSA is 7-8 in singles play and 3-6 in doubles.
- UTRGV is 23-34 against UTSA all-time in a series that dates back to 1982.
- UTSA won the last match up 6-1 on March 2, 2019.
- UTRGV last defeated UTSA March 4, 2016 picking up the 4-2 victory.
Playing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
- Corpus Christi is 10-1 on the season.
- Corpus Christi is coming off of 7-0 win over UTRGV
- Corpus Christi won the first nine game of its season, beating Prairie View A&M four times, Trinity twice, Howard Payne twice, and Louisiana.
- The Islanders are a combined 50-8 in singles and 26-5 in doubles.
- UTRGV is 13-47 all-time against Corpus Christi in a series that dates back to 1961.
- UTRGV last defeated Corpus Christi on March 10, 2010 picking up the 4-3 win in Corpus Christi.
