CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team fell 1-6 to Troy University in the first match of the H-E-B Tournament of Champions on Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. 
 
The Vaqueros (3-4) got a victory in doubles play as the team of redshirt sophomore Te Kani Williams and redshirt senior Mateo Schmit defeated Vito Llinares and Amer Bedwan 7-6 at the No. 3 spot but Troy won its matches at No. 1 and 2 to clinch the point. 
 
In singles, the Vaqueros took two of its matches to three sets as redshirt. sophomore Luka Jankovic forced a tiebreaker against Carles Anton with a 7-6 win in the second set before falling 4-10 in the third. Redshirt junior Zane Kohrs fell 6-7 in the first set to Llinares but answered back with a 7-5 win in the second before falling 7-10 in the tiebreakers. 
 
UTRGV got its lone point at the No. 1 spot as redshirt junior Carlo Izurieta beat Pelayo Antuna by walkover. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Saturday when they face UTSA at 11 a.m. in day two of the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
