RIO GRANDE VALLEY – In their final home game of the season, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 53-50 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Sara Bershers led the Vaqueros (5-12, 1-7 WAC) by posting her first-career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Junior
Burcu Soysal scored 13 points with seven rebounds. Graduate student
Amara Graham scored eight points with five rebounds and four assists.
Josie Williams led the Wolverines (10-5, 8-4 WAC) with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Maria Carvalho scored 11 points with six rebounds and three steals.
Bershers hit her first four shots, including a pair of threes, to help the Vaqueros jump out to a 12-2 lead.
The Wolverines answered with an 8-0 run before Soysal close the first quarter with a layup and opened the second quarter with a jumper to spark a 9-4 run that put the Vaqueros up 21-14.
The Wolverines scored eight of the next 10 points to pull to within one before a Graham three made the score 26-22 late in the quarter.
The Vaqueros opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 34-24 lead. Then, with the score 36-26 and three minutes remaining, the Wolverines scored six-straight points while scoring eight of the final 11 points to climb to within 39-34.
Graham opened the fourth quarter with a layup to give the Vaqueros a 41-34 lead, but the Wolverines answered with an 11-0 run to regain the lead.
A Soysal three brough the Vaqueros to within 45-44. A little later, a Bershers layup made the score 49-48. Then, with 43 seconds remaining, Soysal hit a jumper to make the score 51-50.
