Women's Soccer Opens Season with Overtime Win Over Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI – Freshman Anna Frida Groedem scored in the 96th minute to give The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team the 2-1 overtime victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Wednesday at Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.

UTRGV's (1-0) lead over Corpus Christi (1-0) in the showdown standings is now 15-9.

Groedem took control of the loose ball after the Islanders misplayed a goal kick and found the back of the net for her first-career goal and the game-winner.

The scoring started midway through the first half, junior Shentatious Knox connected with sophomore Anna Torslov outside of the box as Torslov knocked it passed Kennedy Stelling in the 24th minute for the 1-0 lead.

Corpus Christi got its lone goal from Maggie Murray in the 55th minute, which tied the match at 1-1 before going into overtime.

Redshirt junior Maile Lundardi (1-0) made four saves in the match to earn the win.

UTRGV outshot Corpus Christi 11-6 and 8-5 on goal.

Stellling made six saves.

UTRGV will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 7, when it heads to San Antonio to face Incarnate Word at 1 p.m.
