RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team fell 0-7 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Tuesday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
 
The Islanders (10-1) earned three points in the standings but UTRGV (3-3) still leads 15-12. 
 
The Vaqueros took the early advantage in doubles as the reigning WAC Doubles Team of the Week of redshirt freshman Luka Jankovic and redshirt junior Zane Kohrs picked up a 7-5 victory over Ryuya Ata and Nathan Schwartz on court one. 
 
The Islanders took the doubles point by winning on courts two and three. 
 
In singles, redshirt juniorCarlo Izurieta battled it out on court one against Ata. After Ata won the first set 6-4, Izurieta answered back with a 6-3 win in the second. The tiebreaker was a close one but Izurieta fell 6-10. 
 
Kohrs also took his match to three sets as he faced Pascal Lorieul at court three. Lorieul opened with a 6-2 win in the first but Kohrs rebounded with a 6-3 win in the second before falling in the tiebreaker 5-10.
 
The Islanders won on the other four courts to close out the match. 
 
UTRGV will be back in action on February 19 when it competes at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi. 
 
The next event in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is today's women's tennis at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
