LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team defeated the New Mexico State Aggies 1-0 on Saturday at NM Soccer Athletic Complex to complete the two-match series sweep.
After a scoreless first half, the Vaqueros (6-3-2, 3-3-1 WAC) got the matches lone goal just minutes into the second half as junior
Emily Zapata picked up a loose ball and snuck it into the goal giving UTRGV the 1-0 lead.
UTRGV's defense stood strong the rest of the way as it did not allow New Mexico State (3-7, 3-4 WAC) to attempt a shot on goal in the second half.
Redshirt junior
Maile Lunardi(6-3-2) made two saves in the match to record the team's fifth shutout of the season.
The Vaqueros were outshot 9 to 8 but had the 4 to 2 advantage in shots on goal.
UTRGV will be back in action on Thursday, March 18, when it kicks off a two-match series at Grand Canyon University at 9 p.m. at GCU Stadium.
