SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team will head up to San Antonio for a pair of weekend matchups against the UTSA Roadrunners and the Incarnate Word Cardinals.
The Vaqueros will face the Roadrunners on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center. The Vaqueros will then face the Cardinals on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Mabry Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
UTRGV fell 0-7 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi.
The Islanders gained three points in the showdown standings and now lead 28.5 points to 16.5 points.
Corpus Christi won doubles matches at the No. 2 and 3 spots to take the 1-0 lead after doubles and then followed by sweeping singles to clinch the win.
UTRGV (3-10) took a pair of singles matches to three sets. Redshirt freshman
Luka Jankovic dropped the opening set of his match against Pascal Lorieul 3-6. Jankovic answered back with a 6-4 win in the second set before falling 4-10 in the tiebreaker.
Redshirt sophomore
Samuel de Felipe Garcia also dropped his opening set falling 3-6 to Ryuya Ata. De Felipe Garcia bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second and then went toe-to-toe in the tiebreaker before falling 11-13.
Playing UTSA
- UTSA is 8-5 on the season.
- The Roadrunners are coming off of a 4-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday.
- The Roadrunners also have wins over New Mexico State, Abilene Christian, Louisiana, and No. 40 Tulsa.
- UTSA will also face Incarnate Word in the first match of the day on Saturday.
- UTSA is 41-24 in singles play this spring while posting a 22-11 record in doubles.
- Juri Reckow leads the team with a 9-1 in singles play while the team Javier Gonzalez and Garrett Skelly lead the team with a 7-1 record in doubles.
- UTRGV is 23-34 all-time against UTSA in a series that dates back to 1982.
- UTSA won the last matchup picking up the 7-0 win earlier this season at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
- UTRGV last defeated UTSA back on March 4, 2016 picking up the 4-2 victory at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
Playing Incarnate Word
- Incarnate Word is 2-3 on the season.
- Incarnate Word has not played a match since Feb. 6 when it fell 1-6 to No. 5 Texas.
- The Cardinals had matches against Trinity, Our Lady of the Lake, Rice, and Texas A&M postponed.
- Incarnate Word is set to play UTSA on Saturday at the Mabry Tennis Center.
- The Cardinals are 14-16 in singles play while posting a 6-7 record in doubles.
- UTRGV is 5-5 all-time against Incarnate Word in a series that dates back to 2001.
