Volleyball Falls to California Baptist

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team fell to the California Baptist University Lancers 0-3 (12-25, 19-25, 21-25) on Tuesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Senior Veronika Jandova led the Vaqueros (1-9, 1-7 WAC) with nine kills and two blocks. Sophomore Victoire Namarecorded seven kills with five digs and two blocks. Senior Samaret Caraballo recorded seven kills with six digs. Junior Sarah Cruz also had seven kills. Graduate student Mackenzie Coates dished out 26 assists.
 
Calissa Hoye led the Lancers (5-6, 4-6 WAC) with 13 kills on .323 hitting.
 
The Lancers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set. A kill by Nama and two by Cruz helped the Vaqueros pull to within 4-6, but the Lancers won the next four serves to push their lead to six. Then, with the score 8-13, the Lancers scored three-straight points as part of a 5-1 run to push the set out of reach.
 
The Vaqueros built a 6-4 lead in the second set on an ace by freshman Ada Bulgur. The Lancers scored four of the next five points to take the lead. The Vaqueros came back to tie the set three times, including at 10 on a kill by junior Pamela Moreira. The Lancers followed by scoring four-straight points as part of an 8-1 run to go up 18-11. Jandova answered with back-to-back kills to spark a 6-1 run to bring the Vaqueros to within 17-19. The Vaqueros were again within two at 18-20 on a Jandova kill, but that's as close as they got.
 
The Lancers jumped out to a 7-3 lead in set three. A Jandova kill sparked a 5-1 run to tie the set at 8. The Vaqueros took their first lead of the set on an error at 17-16. The Lancers responded by winning five-straight serves to go up 21-17. The Vaqueros took advantage of three errors and a Caraballo kill to pull to within 21-22, but the Lancers won the final three serves.
