ST. GEORGE, Utah – Junior
Freddy Rojas Jr. homered for the fourth-straight game as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team dropped the finale of a four-game series to Dixie State University Trailblazers 3-2 on Sunday at Bruce Hurst Field.
Rojas hit a solo shot in the fourth inning to give the Vaqueros (11-9, 4-4 WAC) a 1-0 lead. He also hit two-run home runs in the first two games of the series and a grand slam in the third game. Rojas finished the series 5-for-14 (.357) with four home runs, one double (1.286 slugging percentage), four walks (.500 on-base percentage), 10 RBI and five runs scored.
The Vaqueros added a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by graduate student
Andy Atwood to make the score 3-2.
That was it against
Tevita Gerber (1-1), who allowed six hits and two walks while striking out four in 7.0 innings.
Junior Vela alum
RJ Ochoa had two of those hits, going 2-for-4. Graduate student
Coleman Grubbs also reached twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Sophomore
J.C. Ariza (0-2) was cruising until the fifth, when a two-out single by
Kaden Hollow tied the game.
Ben Petty-Hull came up with a two-out, two-run single in the sixth to give the Trailblazers (4-12, 3-5 WAC) a 3-1 lead.
Brayden Bonner pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.
UTRGV is scheduled to visit Dallas Baptist, a team receiving votes in the latest NCBWA poll, for a four-game series starting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Fans can watch the games online at
