PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team opens Western Athletic Conference play this weekend with a pair of matches in the first WAC cluster of the season, hosted by Grand Canyon.
The Vaqueros will face the Seattle U on Friday at 3 p.m. at the GCU Tennis Facility. The Vaqueros will then face New Mexico State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Last Time Out
UTRGV fell 3-4 in a tight match against Incarnate Word.
The Vaqueros (3-12) had the momentum early as they took the doubles points from the the Cardinals (3-4). The team of
Zane Kohrs and
Luka Jankovic defeated Marwin Kralemann and Pietro Perego 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.
The duo of redshirt
Carlo Izurieta and
Samuel de Felipe Garcia then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Warren Fulgenzi and Joao Sasso at the No. 2 spot.
In singles, Izurieta gave UTRGV the 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kralemann at the No. 1 spot.
The Cardinals then followed with wins at the No. 2, 5, and 6 spots to take the lead before De Felipe Garcia picked up the three set win over Perego at the No. 3 spot. De Felipe Garcia dropped his first set 4-6 before bouncing back with a 6-1 win the second and then closed out the match with a 6-1 win in the third.
The Cardinals won the match at the No. 4 spot to clinch the win.
