Men's Tennis Opens WAC Play With Seattle U and New Mexico State This Week

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team opens Western Athletic Conference play this weekend with a pair of matches in the first WAC cluster of the season, hosted by Grand Canyon. 
 
The Vaqueros will face the Seattle U on Friday at 3 p.m. at the GCU Tennis Facility. The Vaqueros will then face New Mexico State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV fell 3-4 in a tight match against Incarnate Word.  
 
The Vaqueros (3-12) had the momentum early as they took the doubles points from the the Cardinals (3-4). The team of Zane Kohrs and Luka Jankovic defeated Marwin Kralemann and Pietro Perego 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. 
 
The duo of redshirt Carlo Izurieta and Samuel de Felipe Garcia then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Warren Fulgenzi and Joao Sasso at the No. 2 spot. 
 
In singles, Izurieta gave UTRGV the 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kralemann at the No. 1 spot.
 
The Cardinals then followed with wins at the No. 2, 5, and 6 spots to take the lead before De Felipe Garcia picked up the three set win over Perego at the No. 3 spot. De Felipe Garcia dropped his first set 4-6 before bouncing back with a 6-1 win the second and then closed out the match with a 6-1 win in the third. 
 
The Cardinals won the match at the No. 4 spot to clinch the win. 
 
Playing Seattle U
  • Seattle U is 2-10 on the season. 
  • The Redhawks are on a four-match losing streak. 
  • Seattle U is coming off of a 1-6 loss to Northern Arizona. 
  • Its two wins have come against George Fox and Lewis-Clark State.
  • The Redhawks are 15-57 in singles play this season while posting a 10-25 record in doubles. 
  • Julian Worn leads the team with four singles victories while the team of Worn and Mats Krause lead the team with three doubles victories. 
  • UTRGV is 7-1 all-time against Seattle U in a series that dates back to 1980. 
  • UTRGV won the last match up 7-0 on March 31, 2019 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. 
 
Playing New Mexico State
  • New Mexico is 2-9 on the season.
  • The Aggies are coming off of a 3-4 loss against UC Davis back on March 13 at the Golden State Invitational. 
  • Its two wins have come against Montana and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. 
  • The Aggies are 19-39 in singles play this season while posting 9-20 record in doubles play. 
  • Louis Menard leads the Aggies with 6-3 singles record while the team of Nicolas Buitrago and Jordy Visser lead the team with a 3-3- record in doubles.
  • UTRGV is 3-11 all-time against the Aggies in a series that dates back to 1975. 
  • New Mexico State won the last matchup 6-1 on March 29, 2019 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. 
  • UTRGV's last win over New Mexico State came in 1994.
