PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team closed opened up Western Athletic Conference play with a tight 3-4 loss to the Seattle U Redhawks on Friday at the GCU Tennis Facility. 
 
The Vaqueros (3-13), who were playing shorthanded, fell behind early in the match as the Redhawks (3-10) took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 3 spots. UTRGV did get a win at the No. 2 spot as redshirt sophomore Te Kani Williams and redshirt senior Mateo Schmit defeated Billy Givens-Jensen and Emilio Monroy 7-6. 
 
The Redhawks took the 3-0 advantage in singles with the Vaqueros being shorthanded but the Vaqueros were determined to battle as they won three of the four matches. 
 
Senior Carlo Izurieta got UTRGV on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Eli Ogilvy at the No. 1 spot. Redshirt sophomore Samuel de Felipe Garcia added another point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Lucas Cerbelli at the No. 2 spot. 
 
Williams gave the Vaqueros their third point of the match with a 0-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Julian Worn at the No. 3 spot before the Redhawks won at the No. 4 spot to clinch the win. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Saturday when they face New Mexico State at 3 p.m.
