DALLAS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team allowed five runs in the final two innings falling 6-5 to the Dallas Baptist University Patriots, a team receiving votes in the latest USA Today Coaches and NCBWA polls, on Friday at Horner Ballpark.
The Vaqueros (11-12) led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning before the Patriots (14-6) rallied for the walk-off win against redshirt junior
Deryk Serbantez (1-1), who allowed two runs in the eighth and three runs in the ninth, including
River Town's two-run walk-off double.
Redshirt junior
Freddy Rojas Jr. saw his home run streak end at six games but went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and three walks. Postbaccalaureate student
Christian Sepulveda finished the game 3-fo-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
The Vaqueros got the scoring started in the top of the second when graduate student
Coleman Grubbs delivered an RBI double that drove in redshirt junior
DeAndre' Shelton, which made it 1-0 UTRGV.
UTRGV added to its lead in the top of the fifth after an RBI groundout by redshirt sophomore
Angel De La Cruz that allowed graduate student
Andy Atwood, who started the inning by getting hit by a pitch, to score making it 2-0.
After a solo home run by
Jackson Glenn in the bottom of the fifth, the Vaqueros got a homerun of their own as De La Cruz delivered a three-run homer in the top of the eighth making it 5-1 and setting up Dallas Baptist's rally.
UTRGV starter
Colten Davis didn't allow a run over four innings while striking out striking out four as he didn't factor in the decision.
