(RV) UTRGV Men's Soccer Rallies to Defeat Houston Baptist

HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team, who is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll, trailed 3-0 in the early minutes of the second half but rallied with four unanswered goals to defeat the Houston Baptist Huskies 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday at Sorrels Field.

The Huskies (0-7-2, 0-7-1 WAC) got goals from Gianluca Natera in the sixth minute, Jordi Cobo in the 40thminute, and Bryant Farkarlun in the 47thminute to take the 3-0 lead but the Vaqueros (5-0-2, 5-0-2 WAC) got things rolling in the 60thminute.

Sophomore Martin Tellez took a pass in the box and got the Vaqueros on the board making it 3-1 with his first goal of the season.

Less than five minutes later, senior William Akio took a free kick just outside of the box and snuck it under the wall to find the back of the net in the 65thminute for his seventh goal of the season, which made it 3-2 HBU.

Akio was back at it later in the half as he found junior Elyad Shojaei sliding in the box for the equalizer in the 76thminute. It's Shojaei's first goal of the season and Akio's second assist.

In overtime, it took just 3:28 for the Vaqueros to get the golden goal as junior Moiad Ankir connected with sophomore Juan Rivera in the box and snuck it past Jonathan Ramirez (0-1).

Junior Trevor Schneider (5-0-2) settled down in the second half  as he finished the match with four saves.

The Huskies outshot the Vaqueros 13 to 11 and 7 to 6 on goal.
