CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team is set to face the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Showdown Standings
Corpus Christi currently leads UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, standings 25.5 points to 16.5 points.
Corpus Christi has won the last three events.
The next showdown event is a baseball game at UTRGV Baseball Stadium on March 30.
Last Time Out
UTRGV fell 3-4 to Abilene Christian on March 5 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early advantage in doubles as it won at the No. 3 spot but the Vaqueros answered right back as the duo of Redshirt junior
Carlo Izurieta and redshirt sophomore
Samuel de Felipe Garcia defeated Oswaldo Cano and Joaquin Delgado 6-4 at the No. 2 spot.
The Wildcats then earned the doubles point as they battled back at the No. 1 spot to pick up the win.
In singles, the Wildcats picked up another point with a win at the No. 6 spot but redshirt freshman Juka Jankovic got the Vaqueros on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 over Cano at the No. 3 spot.
ACU then got points from the No. 1 and 4 spots to clinch the win but the Vaqueros weren't done yet as redshirt junior
Zane Kohrs went three sets with Joaquin Delgado at the No. 5 spot. Kohrs fell 2-6 in the opener but answered back with a 6-4 win in the second. Kohrs then dominated the tiebreaker 10-5 to pick up the victory.
At the No. 2 spot, Izurieta fell in the opening set 4-6 to Riley Tran but then picked up a victory in a tight second match 7-6 to force the tiebreaker. Izurieta came out and took the early 5-1 advantage in the tiebreaker before Tran rallied to tie it at 6-6 but Izurieta regained his composure to get the 10-8 victory.

- Corpus Christi is coming off of a 1-4 loss to New Mexico State, which came back on Feb. 21.
- Corpus Christi has defeated UTRGV twice this season with a 7-0 win coming on Feb. 9 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center while also picking up the 4-1 victory in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
- Corpus Christi is 54-12 in singles play and 29-7 in doubles.
- UTRGV is 13-48 all-time against Corpus Christi in a series that dates back to 1961.
- UTRGV last defeated Corpus Christi on March 10, 2010 picking up the 4-3 win in Corpus Christi.
