De La Cruz's Walk-Off Grand Slam Sends Baseball Past Utah Valley in 10

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Sophomore Angel De La Cruz hit a walk-off grand slam in the 10th to send The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team to a 6-2 victory over the Utah Valley University Wolverines on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

The game was tied at 2 entering the 10th. Each team started with a runner at second base. In the top of the inning, the Wolverines (6-23, 4-12 WAC) loaded the bases with one out. Senior Chase Bridges (4-1) got Kyle Coburn to hit a ground ball to second. The drawn-in graduate student Andy Atwood threw home to get the out. Bridges then struck out Pacen Hayes to escape the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, graduate student Coleman Grubbs started at second base and moved to third on fly ball. Dylan Cook (0-1) intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases. De La Cruz came up and got ahead in the count 1-0 before launching the next pitch into the left field bullpen to end the game.

De La Cruz finished 2-for-5 with his third home run of the season.

The Vaqueros (16-17, 8-8 WAC) started the scoring in the third. Postbaccalaureate student Christian Sepulveda reached on a one-out single and stole second. Then, with two outs, graduate student Conrado Diaz hit a grounder to second that went under the glove of Mitch Moralez, allowing Sepuvleda to score to give the Vaqueros a 1-0 lead.

Graduate student Andy Atwood launched his second home run of the season leading off the fourth to make the score 2-0.

Atwood finished 3-for-4.

Sophomore JC Ariza cruised through the first four innings. In the fifth, however, the Wolverines put a runner at second with two outs, setting up an RBI-single by Garrett Broussard. After an error moved Broussard to second, Moralez came up with a run-scoring single to tie the game.

Ariza struck out five in 5.1 innings.

After graduate student Ricky Arevalo completed the sixth, junior Deryk Serbantez pitched a career-high 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, striking out two.
