Baseball Blows Out Seattle U in Game One of Doubleheader

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team scored 10 runs over the first two innings to beat the Seattle U Redhawks 13-0 in seven innings in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

Graduate student Coleman Grubbs opened the game with a first-pitch home run to set the tone. One out later, graduate student Andy Atwood doubled, sophomore Angel De La Cruz drove him in with a single, and then after a wild pitch, De La Cruz scored on a single by junior Vela alum RJ Ochoa. Senior Elijah Alexander doubled to put runners at second and third and then postbaccalaureate student Christian Sepulveda hit an RBI-single and stole second. An error brought home Alexander. Then, with two outs, junior DeAndre' Shelton hit a run-scoring single to knock out Alex Jemal (2-5) with the score 6-0.

Grubbs started the second inning with a single and then junior Freddy Rojas Jr. launched a ball into the parking lot beyond right field for his seventh home run of the season. One out later, the Vaqueros (19-17, 10-8 WAC) put two on to set up RBI-singles by Alexander and Sepulveda, making the score 10-0.

The Vaqueros added a run in the third on an Atwood RBI-double.

In the sixth, freshman PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez recorded his first-career hit and RBI, a run-scoring double, and then Sepulveda lifted a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.

Atwood finished 3-for-4. Alexander, Grubbs and Sepulveda all went 2-for-3.

Graduate student Kevin Palm (1-2) earned his first win of the season, pitching a season-high 5.0 innings of three-hit ball, striking out one without walking anyone.

The Redhawks' (13-19, 7-11 WAC) first hit came with two outs in the fourth – a single by Shane Jamison.
