Baseball Drops Game Two of Doubleheader at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team dropped the second game of a doubleheader to the New Mexico State University Aggies 12-8 on Saturday at Presley Askew Field.

Graduate student Coleman Grubbs led the Vaqueros (22-19, 13-10 WAC) offensively by going a career-high tying 4-for-4 with a career-high tying two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. Grubbs now has two four-hit games in his career, with the other also coming at New Mexico State on May 4, 2019.

Sophomore Jesse Fonteboa recorded his first three RBI and his first hit, a home run, while walking and scoring twice.

Grubbs got the Vaqueros off to a good start, leading off the first with a double against Sammy Natera (1-2), moving to third on a fly ball and scoring on a groundout by graduate student Andy Atwood.

Kevin Jimenez hit a two-run home run off sophomore J.C. Ariza (0-3) in the bottom of the inning to give the Aggies (16-25, 13-14 WAC) a 2-1 lead.

The Vaqueros regained the lead in the top of the second on a two-out double by postbaccalaureate student Christian Sepulveda and an RBI-bunt single by Grubbs.

In the bottom of the inning, though, Tommy Tabak scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Then, with two outs, Cal Villareal hit a two-run single, Ronnie Allen Jr. hit an RBI-triple, and Brandon Dieter hit an RBI-single to put the Aggies up 7-3.

Tabak drove-in a run with a single in the third to make the score 8-3.

The Vaqueros got one back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Fonteboa.

In the seventh, however, the Aggies added four runs on a bases-loaded walk by Jimenez and a bases-clearing triple by Villareal to make the score 12-4.

With two outs in the ninth, the Vaqueros strung together four-straight hits to score four runs. Fonteboa launched a two-run home run, sophomore Jacob Flores singled, junior DeAndre' Shelton hit an RBI-double, and freshman PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez hit an RBI-single.
