MESA, Ariz. – No. 3 seed The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the No. 2 seed Sacramento State Hornets 9-5 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday at Hohokam Stadium.
UTRGV (30-25) faces at least one elimination game and possibly two on Friday depending on the outcome of the late game between No. 1 seed Grand Canyon and No. 4 seed New Mexico State. If Grand Canyon wins, No. 5 seed Seattle U, which eliminated No. 6 seed Utah Valley U 9-8 earlier on Thursday, will face New Mexico State at 1 p.m. and UTRGV will face the winner of that game at 5. If New Mexico State wins, UTRGV will face Seattle U at 1. The winner of that game will then face Grand Canyon at 5. Fans in the United States can watch online via

The Vaqueros got on the board with two outs in the second. Senior
Jacob Hirsh doubled and junior vela alum
RJ Ochoa followed with a walk. That setup an RBI-double by senior
Elijah Alexander to make the score 5-1.
That was it against
Scott Randall (7-2) until the eighth. Postbaccalaureate student
Christian Sepulveda led off with a triple and graduate student
Coleman Grubbs walked. One out later, sophomore
Diego Ramirez hit an RBI-single. One out after that, an error brought Grubbs home. Hirsh followed with a two-run triple to bring the Vaqueros to within 8-5.
Ramirez finished a career-high tying 3-for-5 while Hirsh went 2-for-4.
The Hornets (35-20) batted around against sophomore
Colten Davis (4-2) in the first while plating five runs. The scoring started with one out on singles by
Ryan Walstad and
Dawsen Bacho. Then, with two outs,
Steven Morettohit an RBI-double and
Jack Bollengier hit a two-run double to cap the inning.
Keith Torres hit an RBI-double in the third to make the score 6-1.
The Hornets scored two more runs in the fifth on a
Nick Iwasa single and a
Trevor Doyle groundout.
The Hornets got an insurance run in the eighth on a two-out Bollengier RBI-single.
