Baseball Drops Game Two of Doubleheader to Tarleton

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Tarleton State University Texans 7-6 in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

Graduate student Andy Atwood led the Vaqueros Vaqueros (24-21, 15-12 WAC) offensively, going 3-for-5 with his first multi-home run game, hitting two for three RBI. Junior Freddy Rojas Jr. singled and walked twice. Sophomore Diego Ramirez finished with a single and a walk.

The Texans (20-30, 13-18 WAC) jumped in front right away, bringing home a run in the first on a London Greensacrifice fly before scoring twice more in the second on a Wade Raburn single and a Kemuel Thomas-Rivera sacrifice fly.

The Vaqueros responded in the third on an RBI-single by graduate student Coleman Grubbsthat made the score 3-1.

Atwood hit his first home run and freshman PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez lifted a sacrifice fly in the fourth to tie the score at 3.

The Texans regained the lead on a Green RBI-single in the fifth, but the Vaqueros tied the game on a Grubbs sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

The Texas took the lead for good in the seventh against junior Tyler Kisner (0-2). The Texans loaded the bases with one out, setting up an RBI-single by Dean Frew and a two-run single by Cody Vannoy to make the score 7-4.

That made a winner of A.J. Wood (3-1), who pitched 4.2 innings of relief to close out the game. The only runs against Wood came with two outs in the ninth when Atwood launched a two-run home run across the street beyond the left field wall. Atwood now has eight home runs this season.
