CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team opened Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play with a 2-0 victory over the Chicago State Cougars on Saturday at SeatGeek Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Vaqueros (4-3, 1-0-0 WAC) grabbed the lead in the 70
th minute as junior
Reshaun Walkes connected with junior
Moiad Ankir who was cutting towards the goal as he tapped it in for the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros added another goal in the 88
th minute as a turnover allowed Walkes to streak up the left side of the field and snuck it past Cougar's goalie Joe Bowles for his seventh goal of the season.
The Vaqueros outshot the Cougars (2-5-1, 0-1-0 WAC) 13 to four and eight to one on goal.
Senior
Oliver Padilla made one save for the shutout in his first start of the season.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on October 1 when they face Utah Valley University in their home opener at 1 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Those unable to attend the match can watch in the United States on
