BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team closed out the Soccer for the Cure Tournament, hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham, with a 2-1 victory over the Elon Phoenix on Sunday at BBVA Field.
The Vaqueros (2-2) grabbed the lead in the 37
th minute as junior
Reshaun Walkes continued his hot start to the season. Junior
Moiad Ankir connected with Walkes, who then put one past Elon goalie Cam Pelle for his fifth goal of the season, giving UTRGV the 1-0 lead.
Elon (2-2) got on the board early in the second half as it got a goal from Jeppe Jordoson in the 50
th minute to tie the match.
The match remained tied at 1-1 until the 84
th minute when freshman
Enock Asante took the pass from sophomore
Martin Tellez and scored the go-ahead goal giving the Vaqueros the 2-1 lead. It was Asante's first-career goal.
Elon had a couple of shots late in the match, but the Vaqueros defense held on to close out the win.
Junior
Trevor Schneider (2-2) made six saves while Pelle finished the match with five saves.
UTRGV outshot Elon 14 to 12 and eight to seven on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on September 9 when they hit the road to face Florida Atlantic at 6 p.m. at FAU Soccer Stadium.
