RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team dropped a tight contest to the Utah Valley University Wolverines, 59-56 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Graduate student
Iva Belosevic led the Vaqueros (6-10, 2-2 WAC) with a career-high 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting, a season-high tying eight rebounds and a career-high tying two steals. Freshman
KaCee Kyle scored 12 points with four rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
Jena' Williams scored eight points with two steals. Graduate student
Taylor Muff scored seven points with nine rebounds and four assists. Sophomore
Maria Llorente scored seven points with a career-high seven assists and two steals.
Madison Grange led the Wolverines (7-9, 2-3 WAC) with 24 points and five rebounds.
Josie Williams scored 21 points with 10 rebounds.
Muff and Belosevic opened the game with baskets as the Vaqueros took a 4-0 lead. Then, with the score 8-7, three-pointers by freshman
Arianna Sturdivant and
Jena' Williams helped the Vaqueros go up 14-9.
The Wolverines scored the final seven points of the first quarter and the first four points of the second quarter to take a 20-14 lead.
Kyle broke the run with a three. Then, down 23-17, Belosevic made back-to-back layups to bring the Vaqueros within 23-21.
The Wolverines extended their lead to 33-26 before a Kyle jumper made the score 33-28 at the half.
The Vaqueros pulled within 39-36 midway through the third quarter on a Belosevic three-point play. The Wolverines scored the next six points and led 49-42 at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Vaqueros opened the fourth on a 12-3 run, capped by a
Jena' Williams three, to take a 54-52 lead.
A Kyle jumper put the Vaqueros up 56-54 with 1:11 remaining, but the Wolverines scored the final five points of the game.
UTRGV hosts Dixie State on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at
