ST. GEORGE, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Dixie State University Trailblazers 85-74 on Saturday at Burns Arena.
 
Graduate student 
Xavier Johnson led the Vaqueros (6-13, 1-6 WAC) with a season-high 22 points while hitting a season-high tying five 3-pointers for the second-straight game. Johnson is averaging 19.6 points on 4.2 3-pointers over the last five games.
 
Junior 
Justin Johnson scored 21 points with nine rebounds. Sophomore 
Quinton Johnson II scored a season-high 12 points with a season-high tying nine rebounds. Graduate student 
Mike Adewunmi scored eight points with six rebounds.
 
Hunter Schofield led the Trailblazers (10-10, 3-4 WAC) with 22 points and seven rebounds.
 Isaiah Pope scored 17 points with five rebounds and two steals. 
Dancell Leter scored 15 points with five rebounds.
 Frank Staine scored 11 points with 10 rebounds.
 
The Vaqueros hit four of their first five 3-pointers, including three by 
Xavier Johnson and one by Quinton Johnson, to jump out to leads of 3-0, 9-4 and 12-11.
 
The Trailblazers responded with an 8-0 run before 
Xavier Johnson made a layup, Quinton Johnson sunk a free throw and 
Justin Johnson knocked down a layup to make the score 19-17.
 
The Trailblazers scored the next 14 points as part of a 17-2 run to take a 36-19 lead.
 
Junior 
Ricky "Doc" Nelson answered with a 3-pointer as the Vaqueros went on a 7-2 run to pull within 38-26.
 
Xavier Johnson converted a 3-point play and drilled a 3-pointer to make the score 42-32, but the Trailblazers closed the half on an 8-1 run to go up 50-33.
 
Adewunmi opened the second half with a layup, and one basket later, Quinton Johnson made one of his own to bring the Vaqueros within 15.
 
The Trailblazers led by as much as 23 at 67-44 when 
Justin Johnson made a free throw, a 3-pointer, and a layup to help the Vaqueros go on a 13-4 run to pull within 71-57 with 7:27 remaining.
 
The Trailblazers pushed their lead to 85-65 before the Vaqueros closed the game on a 9-0 run.
 
UTRGV hosts Abilene Christian on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at
