Women's Basketball Falls at Abilene Christian

ABILENE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell 88-69 to the Abilene Christian University (ACU) Wildcats on Thursday at the Teague Center. 
 
The Vaqueros (7-12, 3-4 WAC) were led by sophomore Sara Bershers who scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting while grabbing four rebounds and recording two blocks. Junior Jessica Martino tied a career high with 13 points while graduate student Taylor Muff added eight points with five rebounds. 
 
The Wildcats (13-7, 5-4 WAC) had four players in double-figure scoring with Madi Miller leading the way with 18 points and seven assists. Jamie Bonnarens scored 16 points with four rebounds while Emma Middleton added 12 points with five rebounds and Bella Earle chipped in with 11 points. 
 
The Vaqueros opened the game with a 10-0 run that was started and capped by a jumper and a layup by Bershers but the Wildcats answered with an 8-0 run of their own. Later in the first quarter, sophomore Tiffany McGarity knocked down a three-pointer to give UTRGV the 17-14 lead.
 
Bershers hit another three-pointer to make it 20-18 but the Wildcats got a layup from Miller and a jumper from Middleton to take the 22-20 lead to close out the quarter.
 
In the second, ACU extended their lead to 27-20 after a three-pointer from Bonnarens and a layup from Middleton. After a layup from freshman Brooke Jessen and a layup from Muff, the Wildcats went on a 14-0 run to grab the 46-29 lead with 1:32 left in the half. 
 
In the second half, the Wildcats scored seven of the first 10 points as they extended their lead to 57-38 with 6:14 in the third quarter. Graduate student Iva Belosevic converted a layup, but the Wildcats answered with a 10-2 run to close out the third making it 69-44. 
 
Martino did her best to keep the Vaqueros in the game scoring 10 of her 13 points in the final quarter but the Wildcats kept the Vaqueros at bay the rest of the way. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Saturday when they visit the Tarleton Texans at 2 p.m. at Wisdom Gym.
