Cross Country Men Win South Texas Showdown, UTRGV Sets Seven Personal Records at Arturo Barrios Invitational

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros cross country teams set a combined seven personal records at the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Saturday at the Dale Watts Cross Country Course and the men's team defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the South Texas Showdown presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. 
 
The men's team accumulated 581 points to finish 22nd out of 40 teams. The women's team tallied 797 and finished 29th out of 41 teams. UTRGV and TAMUCC split the South Texas Showdown and each received three points in the rivalry contest as the Vaqueros men slimly beat the Islanders men, who finished 23rd with 584 points, while TAMUCC's women took 27th with 693 points to top UTRGV. 
 
Junior Alex Munoz led the men's team in the 8K race for the second straight meet, placing 104th in a season-best time of 25:22.7 Sophomore Edcouch-Elsa alum Dominik Medrano finished 116th and set a new 8K personal record for a second straight meet, running 25:27.8 on Saturday. Freshman Abraham Morales also ran a new 8K PR, clocking in at 25:35.1 to place 129th. Senior Edinburg North alum Tristan Pena tied at 149th and sophomore Rio Grande City alum Alex Canales tied at 154th to round out the scoring. Canales set a new 8K PR at 25:50.4. 
 
Sophomore Ricardo Garcia finished 166th in a season-best time and freshman McAllen Memorial alum Sebastian Salinas was 181st. Over 375 men competed in the race. Texas A&M won the men's team title with 71 points, followed by Ohio State (136), Tulane (140), Arkansas State (235) and Texas Tech (255). 
 
Sophomore Samantha Gonzalez was the women's team's top finisher for the third meet in a row and tied for 137th in 22:58.5. Sophomore Sharyland High alum Ana Hernandez ran a 6K PR of 23:20.7 to finish 163rd. Sophomore Sharyland High alum Andrea Gallardo also set a new 6K PR, running 23:44.8 to take 197th. Sophomore Brownsville Porter alum Estrella Medellin ran a season-best time to finish 218th. Sophomore McAllen Rowe alum Janie Delgado rounded out the scoring with a 225th place finish. 
 
Freshman PSJA High alum Faith Cruz finished 246th and sophomore Santa Rosa alum Desiree Guerra set a new PR of 24:47.9 to place 255th. Freshman Los Fresnos alum Natalie Guillen was 267th, senior Weslaco High alum Lisa Sanchez was 299th and set a PR at 26:31.7, and freshman Lasara alum Selissa Gonzales finished 315th. There were 342 women's runners at the meet.  
 
Ohio State won the women's team title with 38 points, followed by Lipscomb (87), Florida (108), Texas A&M (175) and SMU (210). 
 
UTRGV's next meet is the Western Athletic Conference Championship on Oct. 29 hosted at Stephen F. Austin.
