CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team fell 97-75 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) Islanders in the South Texas Showdown presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union on Thursday at the American Bank Center.
UTRGV (2-2) had three players with double digit points. Sophomore
Will Johnston had a team-high 19 points, shooting .857 from the field and 4-for-4 from three-point range. Graduate student
Dima Zdor scored 15 points and was 6-for-6 from the field and recorded one block. Senior
Justin Johnson contributed 11 points, five assists and a team-high five rebounds.
TAMUCC (3-1) was led by
Ross Williams (24 points) and
Trevian Tennyson (20 points).
Terrion Murdix added 13 points and six assists while
Isaac Mushila notched a game-high eight rebounds.
The Islanders took a 47-38 lead into halftime and led throughout the contest. UTRGV shot well, notching a .650 shooting percentage from the field to TAMUCC's .486, but only took 40 field goals in the contest. TAMUCC's defense was the difference maker, forcing the Vaqueros to commit 25 turnovers as the Islanders tallied 14 steals. They scored 30 points off turnovers.
After going down 28-13 midway through the first half, the Vaqueros used some runs to trim into the deficit, but TAMUCC widened the gap late in the frame. UTRGV closed the half on a 5-0 run.
TAMUCC went on a 9-0 run early in the second half to go up 56-39. They remained in control throughout the contest behind good defense and outrebounding the Vaqueros to secure the victory
UTRGV is back in action on Monday at the Bert Ogden Arena against Western Illinois at 5 p.m. No. 12 Texas will face Northern Arizona following the game at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Leon Black Classic. UTRGV faces Northern Arizona on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Bert Ogden Arena, then closes the Leon Black Classic at Texas on Nov. 26 at 3 p.m.
