Women's Basketball Falls at Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kansas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball closed out its road trip with a 73-43 loss to the Kansas University Jaywaks on Sunday at Allen Fieldhouse.
 
The Vaqueros (2-3) were led by junior Mele Kailahi who scored 17 points, on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Sophomore Iyana Dorsey added 13 points with three rebounds while graduate student Ashton McCorry chipped in with six points. 
 
The Jayhawks (3-0) had four in double-figure scoring with Holly Kersgieter and Chandler Prater recorded double-doubles. Kersgieter scored 15 points with 15 rebounds while Prater scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Wyvette Mayberry added 12 points and five rebounds and Taiyanna Jackson scored 10 points with six rebounds.
 
Dorsey came out with a purpose in the first quarter for the Vaqueros as she knocked down a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to make it 6-5 in favor of the Jayhawks. Kansas put together a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 15-5 before McCorry hit a three-pointer to snap the scoreless run.
 
In the second quarter, sophomore KaCee Kyle opened the scoring with a three-pointer, but the Jayhawks once again answered with a 9-0 run to push their lead to 28-13. After Kailahi and junior Zariah Sango made back-to-back layups, Kansas went on a 13-3 run to close out the half taking the 41-20 lead into halftime.
 
Kailahi opened the second half with a three-pointer and a layup and then later Dorsey knocked down a jumper to get the Vaqueros within 44-27 but another 8-0 run by the Jayhawks pushed their lead to 52-27 with three minutes left in the quarter. After a three-pointer by Kailahi, the Jayhawks got a three-pointer by Kersgieter to close out the third to take the 58-31 lead into the final quarter.
 
The Vaqueros got seven points from Kailahi in the fourth quarter as she knocked down a pair of free throws, a three-pointer, and a jumper to get them as close as 68-40 but the Jayhawks' lead was too much to overcome.  
 
The Vaqueros will have some time off before returning to action on Nov. 29 when they host the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on School Day, Presented by Rio Bank at 12 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
