AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell 91-54 to the No. 4 University of Texas Longhorns on Saturday at Gregory Gym, as part of the Leon Black Classic.
The Vaqueros (4-3) were led by senior
Justin Johnson who finished with 18 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Junior
Will Johnston added 10 points with a pair of rebounds and graduate student
Dima Zdor chipped in with seven points and four rebounds.
The Longhorns (5-0) had four players in double-figure scoring with
Sir'Jabari Rice leading all scorers with 19 points with five rebounds and five assists.
Marcus Carr scored 18 points with four three-pointers.
Tyrese Hunter scored 17 points and
Dillon Mitchell chipped in with 10 points.
The Longhorns started the game on a 12-1 run before a layup by Zdor gave the Vaqueros their first basket. The Longhorns pushed their lead to 19-5 before the Vaqueros got back-to-back buckets from junior
Daylen Williams and Zdor that made it 19-9 with 9:37 left in the first half.
Later in the half, Johnston knocked down a three-pointer that made it 30-17 with 4:25 left in the half but the Longhorns put together a 6-0 run to push their lead to 36-17. UTRGV got a couple of free throws form Williams and a layup from Johnston to close out the half as the Longhorns took the 44-22 lead into halftime.
The Longhorns came out in the second half and scored the first seven points to push their lead to 51-22 but the Vaqueros answered with a 9-2 run that was capped by a layup from sophomore
Derrius Ward to get the Vaqueros within 53-31.
Later in the half, Johnston knocked down a three-pointer and then junior
Ahren Freeman converted a layup with 10:32 left to play that made it 59-38 in favor of the Longhorns. After a trio of free throws from the Vaqueros, the Longhorns got a three-point from Hunter and Carr and a jumper from Rice to stretch their lead to 72-43 to put the game out of reach.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on November 30 when they host the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
