CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell 65-58 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday at American Bank Center, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
The Islanders (3-5) got three points for the win while the Vaqueros (4-4) got one point for winning the attendance point 2,786 to 1,448. The Vaqueros still lead the Islanders 20-13 in the showdown standings.
Sophomore
Iyana Dorsey led the Vaqueros with 17 points with three assists. Freshman
Charlotte O'Keefe scored 13 points with three rebounds and junior
Halie Jones added 11 points with three rebounds.
Alecia Westbrook led the Islanders with a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Makinna Serrata scored 15 points while
Violeta Verano added 11 points with eight assists.
After the Islanders took the early 7-4 lead the Vaqueros put together a 12-7 run that was capped by a Dorsey layup to take the 16-14 lead with 47 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Islanders answered in the start of the second quarter with a 6-1 run that gave them the 22-17 lead but the Vaqueros rallied on a 13-4 run that saw Dorsey knock down five of her 10 free throws and junior
Tiffany McGarity knock down a pair of three-pointers, but the Islanders took the 34-22 lead into halftime after an 8-2 run.
The second half went back-and-forth as there were 11 lead changes throughout the game. In the third quarter, O'Keefe made a layup that gave the Vaqueros the 41-38 lead but a three-point play by Westbrook gave the Islanders the lead again at 43-42 with 4:16 left in the quarter.
The Vaqueros and Islanders traded runs, but it was UTRGV who took the 51-49 lead into the final quarter after a three-pointer from Dorsey.
The Vaqueros took a 58-49 after a jumper by O'Keefe and a jumper a three-pointer by Jones but the Islanders took control of the game as UTRGV was held scoreless for the final 7:53 of the game.
