RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Seattle U Redhawks 59-53 over on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Junior
Mele Kailahi led the Vaqueros (6-7, 0-2 WAC) by posted her first double-double with 16 points on a career-high four 3-pointers, a career-high 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Sophomore
Deborah Ogayemi scored eight points with five rebounds and two assists. Freshman
Charlotte O'Keefe dished out a career-high five assists with seven points, two blocks, one steal, and two rebounds. Junior
Jena' Williams, sophomore
Iyana Dorsey, and sophomore
KaCee Kyle finished with six points each.
Taliyah Clark led the Redhawks (1-11, 1-1) with 20 points on four 3-pointers and two blocks.
Mya Moore scored 12 points with five rebounds.
Peyton Howard scored nine points with six rebounds and five assists.
The Vaqueros came out on fire, going 9-for-18 from the field in the first quarter, including 5-for-9 from behind the arc, to build a 23-16 lead. Kailahi opened the game with a pair of 3s and Ogayemi knocked down two layups as the Vaqueros jumped out to a 14-7 lead. Williams closed the quarter with a 3-pointer from a few feet behind the arc.
The Vaqueros still led by seven early in the second quarter when a Kyle 3 made the score 27-20. Clark responded with three 3-pointers to power a 12-4 run to give the Redhawks their first lead, 32-31, heading into halftime.
The Redhawks scored the first four points of the third quarter to go up 36-31. Dorsey answered with a layup and a 3-pointer to spark an 11-1 run to give the Vaqueros a 42-37 lead early in the fourth quarter.
The Redhawks scored the next seven points to regain the lead at 44-42. The Vaqueros tied the game on an O'Keefe layup and took a 47-46 lead on a Kailahi 3-point play with 5:29 to play. The Redhawks scored the next eight points to take the lead.
O'Keefe hit a 3-pointer to bring the Vaqueros within 54-50 and Williams made a 3 to make the score 57-53, but that's as close as they got.
UTRGV visits UT Arlington on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Fans can watch domestically on
