SEATTLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Seattle U Redhawks 67-59 on Thursday at Climate Pledge Arena.
Junior
Justin Johnson led the Vaqueros (7-17, 2-10 WAC) with 19 points and nine rebounds. Graduate student
Xavier Johnson scored 13 points. Freshman
Donte Houston Jr. scored nine points with five rebounds. Graduate student
Marek Nelson scored seven points with six rebounds. Graduate student
Mike Adewunmi scored seven points with five rebounds.
Cameron Tyson led the Redhawks (18-6, 9-2 WAC) with 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
Vas Pandza scored 11 points with four rebounds and two steals.
Brandton Chatfield scored eight points with five rebounds and four blocks.
Riley Grigsby scored eight points with nine rebounds.
Darrion Trammel also scored eight points.
Kobe Williamson scored six points with eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Redhawks went up 13-8 before
Marek Nelson converted a 3-point play and Houston hit a jumper and a free throw to give the Vaqueros their first lead at 14-13.
After the Redhawks scored the next four points, junior
LaQuan Butler nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game at 17.
The Vaqueros regained the lead at 20-19 on a 3-point play by
Justin Johnson with 4:38 remaining in the first half.
The Redhawks responded with a 10-1 run to go up 29-21 before a
Xavier Johnson 3-point play brought the Vaqueros within 29-24 at the half.
Xavier Johnson hit a 3 early in the second half to make the score 31-27. The Redhawks scored the next five points as part of an 11-4 run to go up 42-31.
The Vaqueros answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a
Justin Johnson layup, to pull within 42-38 before the Redhawks went on an 8-3 run to take a 50-41 lead.
The Vaqueros scored the next four points to climb within 50-45.
The Redhawks pushed their lead to 61-51 at the 2:51 mark.
Justin Johnson made a pair of free throws and
Xavier Johnson made four free throws to bring the Vaqueros within 61-57 with 1:18 remaining, but that's as close as they got.
UTRGV visits California Baptist on Saturday at 9 p.m. Fans can watch in the United States on
