HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball completed the two-game sweep of Texas Southern University Tigers by winning 1-0 on Saturday at Schroeder Park on the campus of the University of Houston.
The Vaqueros (5-0) face the host Cougars in a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. on
ESPN+. The Vaqueros and Cougars were originally scheduled to play Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday a 1:30 p.m., but the threat of inclement weather forced a schedule change.
The Vaqueros are now 5-0 for the first time since 2017, when the team started 8-0.
The game was scoreless until the eighth. Juniors

Brandon Pimentel drew leadoff walks to knock out
George Osbourne (0-1). Graduate student
Bryan Sturges walked to load the bases and graduate student
Freddy Rojas Jr. hit a sacrifice fly.
That made a winner of graduate student
Max Balderrama Jr. (1-0), who pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.
Junior
Colten Davis started for the Vaqueros and pitched a career-high tying 6.0 scoreless innings, striking out a career-high seven with no walks while allowing just a pair of singles. He retired the first four batters. Then, after allowing a hit, the next 10 in a row. Following a two-out single in the fifth, Davis set down the final four batters he faced, striking out the last two.
Tigers (6-3) started
Brian Williams was equal to the task, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits and three walks while striking out five.
