SAN MARCOS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Texas State University Bobcats 7-3 on Tuesday at Bobcats Ballpark.
Sophomore
Alex Kelch led the Vaqueros (5-3) by posting his fourth multi-hit game in a span of six contests, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Both RBI came on a single in the top of the fourth that brought the Vaqueros within 4-2. Kelch is 8-for-18 (.444) during that six-game stretch.
The Vaqueros added another run in the fifth on an error that scored freshman
Steven Lancia.
The Bobcats (8-1) scored three runs in the first against senior
Deryk Serbantez (0-1) on a
Jose Gonzalez single, a
Dalton Shuffield double and a
Justin Thompson sacrifice fly.
Senior
Ricky Gerik Jr. followed with 1.2 innings of perfect relief.
Senior
Tyler Kisner struck out two in 2.0 innings, giving up an unearned run in the fourth.
Graduate student
Chase Bridges pitched a hitless inning of relief and sophomore
Zach Tjelmeland retired all three batters he faced in the sixth.
In the seventh, however, the Bobcats scored three runs on a Shuffield two-run home run by and a sacrifice fly by
Peyton Lewis.
Shuffield finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Thompson went 2-for-2 with a walk.
John Withrich finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Cameron Bush (1-1) earned the win in relief by striking out two in a scoreless inning.
