LAS VEGAS – After winning in the first two rounds of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament, #8 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the #4 Utah Valley University Wolverines 72-57 in the quarterfinals on Thursday at Orleans Arena.
Freshman
Arianna Sturdivant led the Vaqueros (14-19) with a career-high tying 12 points while hitting a trio of 3-pointers. Graduate student
Taylor Muff scored 12 points with six rebounds. Sophomore
Sara Bershers scored 12 points with four rebounds and two steals.
Josie Williams led the Wolverines (16-14) with 22 points and 1
5 rebounds.
Maria Carvalho scored 21 points.
Megan Jensen scored 16 points with 11 rebounds.
The Vaqueros and Wolverines traded baskets in the early going, with the Vaqueros going up three three times, including 9-6 on a layup by graduate student
Burcu Soysal. Then, with the game tied at 13, the Wolverines went on an 8-2 run to take a 21-15 lead.
A Muff jumper brought the Vaqueros within four at the end of the first, but the Wolverines scored the first four points of the second quarter to go up 25-17.
The Wolverines led 29-22 midway through the quarter when a pair of Sturdivant 3-pointers fueled a 10-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 34-29.
The Wolverines responded with a 14-0 run to take a 43-34 lead midway through the third quarter.
Junior
Jessica Martino broke the run with a 3, but the Wolverines scored the next six points to go up 49-37.
A Sturdivant 3 made the score 49-40 at the start of the fourth, but the Wolverines scored the next seven points as part of an 11-3 run to push the game out of reach.
